Many people today are intimidated by the high cost of buying a brand new computer; and rightfully so. New Macbooks can range anywhere from $1,100 to over $3k, and finding the right PC will force you to sift through hundreds of overpriced Dells and HP’s filled with performance-robbing bloatware. So what’s a person to do?
Upgrade!
When someone mentions to me that their older computer just isn’t cutting it anymore, the first thing I ask them is how much RAM is installed. Random Access Memory, commonly just memory, is used to store applications and background processes that you currently have running. As you open more programs, this memory quickly fills up and starts pouring over into the much slower hard drive, causing a sluggishness that we’ve all experienced.
Older operating systems like Windows XP can operate on lower amounts of RAM and will perform adequately with basic programs on about 1 or 2 gigabytes. If you’d like to use more advanced software, like Adobe Photoshop, or would like to upgrade to the more secure Windows 7 or 8, more memory will be needed to maintain that level of performance.
Even though the memory is one of the most important aspects affecting a computer’s performance, it is actually one of the cheapest. Most PC’s and Macs can have their memory expanded or upgraded for as little as $30, for significant and immediate improvements. Although it is fairly quick and easy to install, I would still recommend using a professional as poking around in your computer without the proper equipment can result in permanent damage to it from static electricity.
